Creating Safer Communities Through Mentoring: Durham Youth Mentoring Alliance Strategic Planning Session & Community Forum
We invite mentoring organizations, youth, and cross-sector partners from the workforce, government, education, and philanthropy to collaborate with us in Creating Safer Communities Through Mentoring. As part of the National Youth Employment Coalition’s (NYEC) Youth Champion Communities: Mayors Challenge, we will present Phase I recommendations from the Durham Youth Mentoring Alliance, host a community forum featuring panelists from the DYMA Core Team, and continue the strategic planning process to build upon the strengths of the mentoring ecosystem in Durham.
Panel Description: Community safety remains a critical challenge facing many American communities, including Durham. One of the biggest challenges currently facing Durham is crime involving people under the age of 25, with youth offenses representing close to 300 cases this year. Mentoring can transform communities by enhancing protective factors for youth that promote positive development and providing access to opportunities that support their long-term goals and aspirations.
In this discussion, you will learn about the role mentoring plays in improving academic, social, and economic prospects for youth and creating safer communities.
